Prepare for a long wait - it's worth it!
Best. Place. Ever. It just has a great feel. Went 3 years ago and then this year. I will admit the James Beard award has boosted their popularity quite a bit. by 5:30 or 6pm it is very possible to have very long lines.
Stopped in here after reading a google review. Very pleased we did. There was a 1hr wait at 7pm but we filled the time in quickly with a drink or 2. We were asked if we would be ok with a communal table which we were. We ordered the Lobster Roll, New England Seafood Chowder and a Chicken Sandwich. The service was excellent and fast. This food was was possibly the best seafood and tastiest burger we have had. Couldn't fault a thing. Highly recommended.
I recommend you pop into Eventide first and then go visit the historic area while you wait. Absolutely lovely food, well prepared and served by friendly professionals. On the day i was there i watched a difficult diner send back a perfectly prepared lobster roll along with $40 more of perfectly prepared food because it was not what she expected. The server handled it politely like the pro that she is. I also love the selection of oysters here... though i do wish they would bring more down from Canada. While i appreciate their farm-to-table leanings, since Canadian shell fish are much harder to access in the south it would be great if i could access them when i head north.
The problem with Eventide is that EVERYONE wants to go there, so there will always be a wait. Sure, the food is great, but this place has been so hyped it's slowly become a place I avoid altogether. There is other really great food in Portland I won't have to wait 2 hours+ for...
Must get the lobster seafood stew and don't share it! Trust me. This has to be one of my all time favorite restaurants. Thank you for the amazing service too, Eventide. =)
This was a lovely way to experience the seafood of Portland. Like having a flight of beers, I ordered a half dozen local oysters-- each a different variety. I also had the special tomato salad with toasted sesame seeds, micro greens, and a creamy cheese. They have great beers on tap. Portions are small and a little pricey, it felt more like a tasting menu or tapas, so I'd recommend going for happy hour or appetizers rather than a full meal. I also really appreciated the aesthetic of the restaurant: from the sky blue walls to etchings of shellfish on the walls, it's airy, bright, and feels like the ocean in the summer. The owners also own Golden Paw next door!
Everyone in Portland knows Eventide is a must for anyone visiting town. If you're a fan of oysters there's simply no equal and even if you're not, everything else I've ever tried on their menu has been way above par (pecan pie was the best I've ever had). Dishes are plated beautifully and the atmosphere has a uniquely "Portland" vibe.
