Most of my recent rentals through National have enjoyed the benefit of the Emerald Isle, which means no interaction with the counter at all. At this location, there is no Emerald Isle, and therefore had to go to the counter. I was greeted by a very friendly associate who had a car ready for me, and I was on my way in moments. The experience was smooth, easy, and a reminder that not everything has to be automated everywhere.
The reason I rented from National is because I am an Emerald Executive member. The National at Portland, ME does not have an Emerald isle. I have to wait in line then was told I can not get upgrade either. I can understand that I need to go through the counter if there is no agents in the parking lot. But they can at lease give me upgrade. It was not states when I made the reservation. Felt cheated.
My experience with the local National Car Rental was great. HOWEVER, my issue is with corporate. I recently rented a vehicle and left a wireless device in the trunk. I was very late for a flight and was not able to get back to the car to get it. I called the 800 number hoping I could speak to someone that was at the rental place I just left. The answer was no, send an email to lost and found. There was no way I could speak to a human. Not a care in the world. I sent multiple emails, spoke to customer service and NOTHING, until I finally found a number for the local location. Needless to say this was days later and my device is gone, $300 down the drain. All due to a lack of caring for a customer. Taking 2 minutes to help. I will never use national again and never recommend them. The local employees were wonderful and kind but it was too late, corporate could care less. Very sad when it is always about the customer and National didn’t care.
While the car was great - I'm still left trying to figure out how they charge $63 for a tank of gas. I filled the car while I had it and it was at least $15 less than that. Way to go National. Not worth taking the fuel service option in this case.
Our rental at National in Portland ME, could not have been easier. The complete check-in process took less than five minutes, with absolutely no pressure to take additional insurance, pre-paid gas, or any other add-on. The car was a new Hyundai Santa Fe, which was perfect for our two weeks exploring Maine. The return was even faster and simpler than the pick-up. The assistant scanned the car as we were entering the rental return area and had my receipt before I could get our bags out of the back. This was probably the best rental experience I've had anywhere.
